Our Story and Approach
Building broadcast environments with purpose, craftsmanship, and an understanding of what makes television compelling.
Where Design Meets Broadcast
Harbor-crater began in 2009 when a small group of scenic designers recognised a gap in the UK broadcast market. Production companies needed partners who understood both creative vision and technical constraints, professionals who could translate concepts into buildable, camera-ready environments.
We established our workshop in Manchester, chosen for its central location and strong manufacturing heritage. That original team of four has grown to fifteen, yet we maintain the collaborative culture that defined our early projects.
Every member of our staff brings direct production experience. We have worked as set dressers, lighting technicians, and production designers before moving into fabrication and design. This background informs how we approach each brief, anticipating challenges that purely theoretical designers might overlook.
Guiding Principles
The values that shape our work and client relationships.
Function Enables Form
Beautiful designs fail if they interfere with production workflows. We consider camera angles, lighting positions, and presenter movement before finalising any aesthetic element. Form follows function, but the result should still inspire.
Material Honesty
We select materials appropriate to each application rather than defaulting to cheaper alternatives. When budget requires compromise, we communicate openly about trade-offs rather than disguising them.
Collaborative Process
Our best work emerges from genuine partnership with production teams. We listen carefully, ask probing questions, and remain open to direction while contributing our specialised expertise.
Workshop Capabilities
Our Manchester facility spans 8,000 square feet of dedicated workshop space equipped for diverse fabrication methods. We handle woodworking, metalwork, finishing, and assembly under one roof, maintaining quality control throughout the production process.
This vertical integration means faster turnaround and better coordination between trades. When a design requires custom metalwork integrated with painted scenic panels, our team manages the interface internally rather than coordinating between separate suppliers.
We have invested in both traditional craft tools and modern technology. CNC routing enables precise repetitive cuts, while skilled hands shape the details that make each set distinctive. The combination produces consistent quality at reasonable cost.
